A Transformative Legacy Gift

With alumna Ruth Bedford '32's bequest in 2014, Foxcroft received a transformative gift of $40 million — the largest gift ever bestowed on a girls’ school in the United States, and the largest gift granted to any secondary school nationwide that year. Her bequest expresses her enduring affection for Foxcroft School.

  • Ruth T. Bedford ’32 Merit Scholarship for the Arts Announced

    The Ruth T. Bedford ’32 Merit Scholarship for the Arts, which will support as many as eight Foxcroft School students with $25,000-a-year grants, has been endowed by a portion of the largest gift ever made to a girls’ high school, Head of School Catherine S. McGehee announced Wednesday.

    The announcement comes one year to the day after Foxcroft made headlines by revealing that Bedford, a 1932 Foxcroft graduate, had bequeathed the boarding and day school $40 million.

    Ruth Bedford ’32 Receives Anne Kane McGuire Distinguished Service Award

    Benefactor becomes first posthumous recipient of Board of Trustees' highest honor

    The Board of Trustees recently bestowed its highest honor — the Anne Kane McGuire ’52 Distinguished Service Award — on Ruth Thomas Bedford, a member of the Class of 1932 whose love for her alma mater led to a historic gift to the girls boarding and day school.

    In Good Company: Two Connecticut Non-Profits Share Legacy of Ruth Bedford '32

    Nearly five months after Foxcroft announced the transformative $40 million gift from alumna Ruth Bedford '32, Norwalk Hospital and the Westport Weston Family YMCA jointly revealed today that they are the beneficiaries of similar bequests by Ms. Bedford.

    According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, these two Connecticut nonprofits which her family helped establish nearly a century ago will also each receive $40 million.
